  • ADDITIONAL INFO

A cylindrical shape silver Kiddush cup, on a pedestal, marked with several marks: the silversmith's maker's mark, Kiev's town mark (the Archangel Michael, wielding a flaming sword), and the Russian silver standard mark (84 zolotniki). The cup is highly detailed and decorated with architectural motifs and floral pattern decorations within arch frames.

The observance of the Sabbath is one of the central commandments of the Jewish way of life and includes respect and honor for the sanctity of the day and enjoyment of it. This is obtained by practicing special traditions regarding food and drink, fine utensils and clothing of appropriate quality. The Kiddush cup, a main utensil used in the sanctification of the Sabbath, is usually made of silver, sometimes inscribed with words in honor of the Sabbath. In many countries, secular objects have been transformed into Jewish ceremonial art. Thus, wine goblets or vodka beakers, as with the cup above, have become Kiddush cups.
