The observance of the Sabbath is one of the central commandments of the Jewish way of life and includes respect and honor for the sanctity of the day and enjoyment of it. This is obtained by practicing special traditions regarding food and drink, fine utensils and clothing of appropriate quality. The Kiddush cup, a main utensil used in the sanctification of the Sabbath, is usually made of silver, sometimes inscribed with words in honor of the Sabbath. In order to glorify the Kiddush cup, a matching plate is sometimes added.
