Silver Mezuzah Case
ADDITIONAL INFO
A beautiful silver Mezuzah case, marked "925". The front of the mezuzah case, decorated with floral patterns, has the Hebrew letter shin (ש), the first letter of Shaddai (Hebrew for Almighty) which is one of the biblical names of God, and also serves as an acronym for Shomer Daltot Israel - Guardian of Israel's doors.
The mezuzah, affixed to the doorposts of Jewish homes, is a parchment scroll written by an authorized scribe, with biblical extracts from Deuteronomy. These extracts consist of the Jewish prayer Shema Israel. The parchment is rolled up and inserted in a case, with the letters שדי (Shaddai) exposed at an opening.
While the important part of the mezuzah is the parchment scroll, the klaf, and not the case itself, designing and producing mezuzah cases have been elevated to a form of art over the ages. Mezuzah cases vary in size and style, and are produced from a wide variety of materials, from silver and precious metals, to wood, stone, ceramics, pewter, and more.
