Flowers from the Holy Land
During the 19th century, folk artists in the land of Israel often produced various objects for pilgrims as souvenirs from their visit to the Holy Land; Boxes made of olive wood, decorated tiles, gems, book covers and albums - all made in the land of Israel. One of my favorite type of souvenir made for pilgrims of all faiths is "Flowers from the Holy Land" albums, dried flowers attached to postcards, greeting cards and photo albums, as seen below. Among the artists who created these souvenirs is Meir Rozin, a painter, lithograph, and creator of souvenirs from the Holy Land. Rozin was born in 1876 in Vitebsk, Russia. His family immigrated in 1891 and settled in Jerusalem. He studied in the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, and in 1915 was among the founders of The Artists and Craftsmen Association in Jerusalem. Rozin died in Jerusalem in 1917.
